Ardell Oster, Iwo Jima veteran

Ardell W. Oster died on November 12, 2010. He was part of the 24th Replacement Draft, and fought on Iwo Jima with Company A from February 24 to March 16.

Mr. Oster died Friday, Nov. 12, 2010, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness.

Ardell Oster was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Bellevue, the son of Jacob and Francis (Hingtgen) Oster. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II. After training at Camp Pendleton, he was stationed in Maui. He took part with his fellow Marines in the battle of Iwo Jima. After being honorably discharged in 1946, he operated a Conoco Station at the foot of the I-74 Bridge. He married Anna Marie Herbert Nov. 26, 1947. She died April 22, 2009.

They were members of the church for many years, where Ardell served as an usher during masses.

Mr. Oster was involved in the trucking industry for Meadows and USF Holland, retiring in 1989. He participated in many truck rodeos and jamborees, and coached youth sports.

He served on the Long Grove City Council and the fire department, and after his retirement, cut grass and prepared the ball diamonds. He volunteered at the Strawberry Festival, and served as grand marshal. He also was an avid outdoorsman.

Memorials may be made to the family, the American Heart Association, or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Survivors include his children, DeeDee Eckman, Marina Del Ray, Calif.; Pat (Dan) Jens, Park View, Bill (Pat) Oster, Long Grove, Bob (Diane) Oster, Eldridge, Cindy Arp, Eldridge; grandchildren, Chad and Eric Jens, Scott (Amber) Oster, Kelly (Matt) Livingston, Troy (Tami) Oster, Natalie (Kevin) Collins, Nicole (Chad Brandmeyer) Oster, and Alyssa (Jake) Laughlin; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Algean Park, Maquoketa; a brother, Eldon, Bellevue; a sister-in-law, Holly Shouse, Davenport; and a brother-in-law, Don Morehead, Maquoketa.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosie Morehead; a brother, Jerry and his wife Betty; sisters-in-law, Donna Oster, and Margaret Mundt and husband Kenny; and a brother-in-law, Grover Park.
