Locate a copy of the 24th Marines "Red Book" that was published in 1943.
It's like a yearbook for the Regiment - most importantly, it lists EVERYONE in the regiment (original members, anyway) - by company - with picture.
All those ID problems will go right away....
EDIT: Jeff Padell is the hero of the day - he has his father's copy of the Red Book (Sergeant Leon Padelskas served with HQ/2/24; he's scanned the pages for Second Battalion here and generously agreed to scan First Battalion for me!
Interesting to note: the link for I Company has notes (from the original owner) about most of the men (killed, wounded, and battle) - 1st Lt. Ralph E. Reiss was killed on Namur by "dirty enlisted men." An intriguing note if ever there was one....
ALSO EDIT: slowly catching up with the backdated Saipan entries, we're up to June 22, D+7.
