Iwo Jima Flag Raiser Granted Citizenship

An interesting news item from CNN this morning: Sergeant Michael Strank, one of the Marines in Joe Rosenthal's famous picture of the flag raising on Iwo Jima, has been posthumously given his immigration papers. Strank, who was born in Czechoslovakia and emigrated with his parents at age 3, technically became a citizen when his father was naturalized in 1935. However, Michael never received his official citizenship papers.

Sergeant Strank was killed on Iwo Jima on March 1, 1945.

Last Tuesday, in a ceremony at the Marine Corps Memorial in Washington, Citizen and Immigration Services presented Strank's younger sister with his official certificate of citizenship.

Story is here.
